Chapter Reports
Flathead:
Jane Kollmeyer called in a report. The Flathead Chapter held a legislative tour
on October 4th. They had 24 people attend; eight were running for
political office of some kind. It was a good opportunity to interact with
people not normally associated with SAF. Jane would like to see a Legislative
breakfast held soon after the legislative session begins in 2001.
Libby: Will have
their first fall meeting next week, Jennifer Nelson USFS will present a talk on
nutritional productivity of DF and ninebark sites. The annual spouse night will
be held November 30th. The last meeting of the year will be held in
December.
Missoula: The chapter executive committee met on October 4th
to plan the rest of this years meetings. For October Ian Marquand from KPAX
will show the two videos he made this fall, Fires 2000 and The Forest for
Humanity video. The chapter will meet on November 30th and celebrate
the 100th anniversary of SAF. Scott Kuehn will show a revised slide
and video of the presentation he made at the annual meeting. The December
meeting will be traditional spouse/guest night with George Knapp giving a
presentation on Lewis and Clark and the upcoming bicentennial celebration of
the Corps of Discovery. The chapter is looking for ways to help the students
attend the national meeting in D.C. next month.
Eastside: Nothing new
to report. Their meeting announcements and dates are on the web site. Lars
attended the Forest management hearings in Missoula and Billings and submitted
testimony for the Billings hearing.
Student: No report.
They meet the second and fourth Thursday every month, Gordy will try and make
it to one of their next meetings.
Committee Reports:
Science and Technology:
No report.
Centennial Committee:
The time capsule was buried at the Fort during the annual meeting. The large
rock and plaque will be installed over the time capsule sometime this fall.
Policy: Plans are
underway for the legislative breakfast the first or second week of January in Helena. The committee is working on the format
and agenda. There will soon be a revised version of the rocky mountain
standards for FSC certification. Gordy will keep track of what is going on.
Dave would like to see SAF get involved in the air quality issue in Montana.
The committee will work on details and send a letter to let the principals know
we are interested and would like to offer our expertise.
Newsletter:
The next issue of the newsletter will be mailed out next week. Cait would like
to see Montana have a distinctive logo to differentiate us from other SAF
publications. Cait will follow-up with the chapter chairs for ideas. Cait
should know in early December what her future plans in relation to continuing
to do the newsletter are. The question was asked what do we do with extra
copies of the newsletter? We should use them to help generate new membership,
maybe distribute to appropriate offices around the state.
CFE/CF: Nothing
new to report.
Mentor Program:
Nothing new to report.
Montana Natural Resources Youth Camp: Nothing new to report.
Cultural Diversity:
Nothing new to report.
Membership:
Nothing new to report.
Communications:
We had some good feedback from the national office on the State meeting. Bev is
looking for new media contacts and ways to get SAF info out to the public.
BLM Advisory Council: Nothing
new to report.
Old Business:
Recap on 2000 Annual Meeting: Still working on the final financial report. Good verbal
feed back from those that attended, especially from national. We need to
continue to promote attendance through the individual Chapters. Survey members
that didn't attend and ask what would make the annual meeting attractive to
them.
Forests for Humanity:
Tomorrow Saturday 14th the Family will plant trees on the Qually
Tree Farm where the logs for their house were harvested. Another media event,
film footage will be taken to add to the video.
Update on State Meeting 2001: Eastside Chapter will discuss at their October 26 meeting.
The next annual meeting will be held in the spring.
Review 2000 Goals:
see attached 2000 Goals. The group felt that most goals set up for 2000 either
have been accomplished or will be by the end of the year. It was also mentioned
that goal setting at the beginning of the year is a worthwhile activity.
New Business:
Students' trip to D.C.:
The Student Chapter is looking for financial help to get to the National
convention in Washington D.C. Since the State account doesn't have much extra
funding this year, the students will work with the individual chapters to get
donations for travel assistance.
John Ottman's Challenge:
At the banquet John Otttman offered to donate the first $10,000 to truck
building material and build a Habitat Home somewhere on the East Coast. He
challenged SAF and MLA to match his offer to get the project done. Dave Stack
and Scott Kuehn will sit down with John and find out his objectives, and work
out the details. A lot of other ideas on how to set up this project, to get the
best result were discussed.
Next Meeting will be December 15th 9:30am at Plum
Creek Office Missoula
Gordy adjourned the
meeting at 12:10 p.m.
