I took all of these pictures with a $180 Canon all-weather, full-auto 35mm camera using
Fuji color slide film. The slides were then scanned in with a slide scanner. I did have to
do a little image manipulation to get the colors and gamma back to something that
resembled the original slides, but I haven't bumped up these images in any way.
So, yes, it will look like this for you, if you go there. I haven't done any pushing,
dodging, or burning to make these images look any better than the original slides. For
those of you who don't understand all of that, you may have seen postcards where hills are
exceptionally green, or the ocean is a little too turquoise. Well, I didn't do any color
manipulations like that.
And since I get these questions pretty frequently, I'll head a couple of them off right
now:
- I don't know where you can apply to get a job working in the park. I do know that
competition is stiff for working as a park employee, whereas contractor jobs
are much easier to get. (Things like working in the lodges waiting tables and washing
dishes are contractor jobs.)
- I've done very little to no hiking in the park. I don't have any real recommendations
for neato places to see. What I find neat may be really boring to you. Glacier Park is
Grizzly Bear country, so you should take extra, extra care when hiking around noisy areas
(streams, waterfalls), or when crossing ridges or turning corners. Mama bears upset
easily. Montana weather is unpredictable until about August, so plan for a little rain, or
even some snow on your July ten-mile hike (it does snow here, sometimes, in July).
- Feel free to ask me questions, but don't get upset if I don't have an answer, or have
time to answer. I do work 40-60 hours per week, and I don't know everything.
- You are free to use these images for non-profit, non-sale use. According to Copyright
Law, these are copyrighted, even if I don't explicitly say they are.
- I hope to be adding more images soon.
Thanks for taking the time to look at these images. I hope you get a chance to revisit
the park.
Cheers,
Scott Purl
