The Lubrecht Experimental Forest offers a unique set of conference and meeting facilities at reasonable rates. Situated in the beautiful Big Blackfoot River valley of Western Montana, Lubrecht is only 40 minutes from Missoula, yet it offers a quiet, secluded setting in a forested landscape. The Castles Forestry Center has various meeting rooms for an executive session of six people or a fully equipped large lecture room that will comfortably seat 60 people for a meeting or seminar. The Center was designed to be used by people coming in from the field in all types of weather, so there is no need to park your boots at the door. Pictured below on the top left is the Castles Forestry Center with its south-facing deck; the lecture or large meeting room on the top right; the small conference room with fireplace and oak table that seats 12 on the lower left; and on the lower right is one of the two classrooms that can be used for displays, break-out meeting space or a host of other uses. Not shown are the complimentary tea and coffee service we provide with your rental of the room.
We have a range of overnight accommodations from fully-furnished
Lodge rooms to "bring your own sleeping bag", wood-heated
cabins. Our nicest rooms are in the Lodge, which is located about
100 yards from the Forestry Center. The Lodge, built in 1996, has
16 sleeping rooms with two single beds each, a common area, kitchen,
and bathrooms at the end of the hall. The Lodge is available to "groups"
of at least 10 people - we do not rent rooms only as a motel would.
The Lodge can be used in conjunction with meetings in the Forestry
Center or as a "stand-alone", self-contained facility for
church retreats, family gatherings and so forth. Nearby the Lodge
is a duplex that contains two, fully-furnished one-bedroom apartments.
The units have a queen-sized sofa sleeper in the living area so up
to four people (more with kids) can use the units to enjoy a few days
fishing on the nearby Blackfoot or skiing our cross-country trails.
Researchers are also welcome to rent the units for an extended period
to house personnel. Below top left is a front view of the Lodge and
Duplex; top right is a typical Lodge room; the Lodge common area is

right.
The student camp area is located across the meadow from the Forestry Center, Lodge and Duplex. Here we have more rustic accommodations in sleeping cabins that house from two to six people each for a total of 55 to 60 people. The larger, "boxcar looking" cabins are, in fact, old lumberjack sleeping cars that came from the Bear Creek railroad logging camp in 1957. Donated by the Anaconda Company, these boxcars still bear the caulked boot marks of the old time loggers. These units, best suited for late spring to early fall use, are furnished with beds, mattresses, desks, dressers, and wood stoves. Below left are some two-person cabins in our camp area; and right is the interior of the Recreation Hall.
Thirty miles northeast of Missoula and the university campus, we are close and accessible -- but Ohhhh! so far away from the melee. Miles of cross country hiking and ski trails await your apr'es meeting recreational yearnings. Stay over to enjoy Missoula's regional shopping centers and a wide variety of recreational opportunities at nearby Seeley and Salmon Lakes. We are nestled mid-way between Glacier and Yellowstone to enhance your visit. For more information and to plan and event please email Janie Howser at janie.howser@cfc.umt.edu.
